The Legend of Bhishma

December 05, 2025 • History & Name

Names carry power. They shape our identity and often guide our destiny. My name, Bhishma, comes from one of the greatest epics in human history: The Mahabharata.

The Terrible Oath

Originally named Devavrata, he was a prince of the Kuru Kingdom. He wanted to see his father happy, but his father fell in love with a fisherwoman whose father demanded that her children inherit the throne. To facilitate this marriage and renounce his own claim, Devavrata took a lifelong vow of celibacy and loyalty to the throne.

Because of this "terrible" (Bhishan) oath, he came to be known as Bhishma.

Why It Matters to Me

While I do not wield weapons or sit on a throne of arrows, I carry the essence of this name: Duty and Resilience.

In my art, this translates to a commitment to quality. When I take on a branding project or a commission, I make a silent vow to deliver work that exceeds expectations. It reminds me that true power lies not in what we take, but in what we give.
